Clogged drain repair in Detroit — diagnose first, repair what's actually broken
Every drain shop in Detroit charges $200 to "snake your drain." Half the time, the drain isn't clogged — it's a P-trap with a cracked collar, a vent that's blocked, or a fitting that's dropped at the joint. Cabling those doesn't fix the problem. We diagnose first, then repair what's actually broken.
"Slow drain" means six different things. Each gets a different fix.
This is the actual decision tree our techs run before any cable comes off the truck. Walk down the tree with us before you pay anyone to snake your drain.
Main line restriction
The clog is past the branch — in the main line itself. Cabling a single fixture won't reach it. We cable from the main cleanout and camera-verify.
Branch- or fixture-level issue
Local to this fixture — could be P-trap, vent, fitting, or true clog. Continue diagnosis below.
Venting issue, not a clog
The vent stack is partially blocked — usually a bird's nest, leaves, or ice plug at the roof penetration. Cabling the drain won't help. We clear the vent.
True drain restriction
Continue to the next question to determine if it's a clog or a broken pipe.
Likely true clog
Something physical lodged in the line — hair mat, kid's toy, "flushable" wipe. Cable clears the obstruction, line restored.
Buildup or pipe failure
Either grease/scale buildup in the line (hydro jet candidate) or a dropped fitting / cracked collar (P-trap repair). Camera-scope confirms which.
Five Detroit drain failures that masquerade as "clogs"
Each of these mimics a clog — slow drain, gurgling, smell, backup. Cabling doesn't fix any of them. We see all five every week.
Dropped fitting
Cast iron joint loosens, the elbow drops 1/4". Water sits, eventually backs up. Cabling makes it worse. Fix: repair coupling — $245.
Cracked P-trap
Hairline crack in the trap arm. Drains slow because air enters mid-flow. Often misdiagnosed as clog. Fix: trap replacement — $195.
Blocked vent stack
Bird nest, leaves, or winter ice plug at the roof. Drain pulls a vacuum, runs slow. Fix: roof vent clearing — $185.
Bellied pipe
Pipe section dropped under settled soil. Creates a low spot that traps water and debris. Fix: spot repair or sleeve — quoted on-site.
Failed wax ring
Toilet rocks slightly, wax ring loses seal. Sewer gas escapes, "slow flush" pattern. Fix: pull-and-reseat toilet — $215.
When does the drain need repair instead of cleaning?
Sometimes cabling is the right answer. Sometimes it's pushing the problem an inch further down the pipe. Here's how we decide.
Cable the drain Most common
The pipe is structurally fine, but an obstruction is sitting in it. Cable clears, hot-water flow restores, you're back in business.
- Sudden onset, single fixture
- No gurgling in other drains
- Camera shows intact pipe wall
- No visible offsets or bellies
- Repeat clogs more than 12 months apart
Repair the drain When cabling won't hold
The pipe itself has failed. Cabling provides 2 weeks of relief and then the problem returns — sometimes worse. Repair is the lower-cost path long-term.
- Cabling didn't restore flow fully
- Camera shows offset, crack, or belly
- Repeated clogs at the same spot
- Visible water staining at the fitting
- Sewer odor without an obvious cause
