What does a sewer camera inspection actually find?
A sewer camera scope on a typical pre-1965 Detroit-area home rarely produces a clean "everything looks great" report. After 60-100 years of soil settlement, root pressure, freeze-thaw cycles, and chemical drain-cleaner abuse, the inside of your lateral has stories to tell. Most homeowners have never seen the inside of their own sewer pipe, so this guide walks through the nine most common findings we document on a typical Metro Detroit camera inspection — what each one actually means, how serious it is, and how it gets resolved. We'll use NASSCO PACP defect codes where applicable, because that's the standard language municipal sewer departments and insurance carriers use when evaluating pipe condition.
What we find on a typical Detroit lateral
- Root intrusion (TRL/TFC codes) — #1 finding
- Cast-iron scale buildup — common in pre-1965 homes
- Hairline crack or fracture (CL, CC codes)
- Joint offset (JOM, JOL codes)
- Bellied or sagging pipe (SAG code)
- Biofilm coating — the slimy layer
- Infiltration (I codes) — groundwater entering
- Foreign object — toys, wipes, tools
- Collapsed or deformed section — the worst-case
The camera that's looking
Before walking through the findings, a brief note on the equipment, because the camera quality directly affects what's findable. That sonde-locator combination is what separates a real inspection from a "we ran a camera" inspection. Without the locator, you have video of something inside a pipe but no idea where to dig if a repair is needed. With it, you have GPS-accurate findings tied to a specific spot on the property.
Finding 1: Root intrusion (NASSCO codes TRL, TFC, TBC)
The most common Detroit finding, hands down. Tree roots enter the sewer line through the joint seams where bell-and-spigot pipe sections meet. NASSCO PACP classifies them by density and location:
- TRL — Tap Roots Light (small individual roots through a joint)
- TFC — Tap Roots Fine (a hair-like cluster)
- TBC — Tap Roots Ball (a fully formed root mat blocking part of the line)
- RFC — Roots Fine Connection (roots at a lateral connection to the main)
What we see on the monitor: white or tan hair-like fibers crossing the pipe interior, often hanging from the upper hemisphere where the joint seam is most vulnerable. In severe cases, a dense brown root ball occupying 60-80% of the pipe diameter. Most common Detroit tree species responsible: silver maple, Norway maple, American elm, white willow, red oak, and silver poplar.
Resolution path: hydro jetting with a Picote Mini Cleaner or Spartan jet-truck root-cutting nozzle, followed by RootX or Sanafoam Razorooter II foaming herbicide treatment. For severe cases with structural pipe damage, trenchless CIPP lining seals the joints permanently. Full root-signs guide.
Finding 2: Cast-iron scale buildup
NASSCO categorizes this under DAE (Deposits Attached, Encrustation). The interior of a pre-1965 cast-iron sewer pipe oxidizes over decades, forming a brown-orange scaly buildup on the pipe wall. Over 50-80 years, that scale can reduce the inside diameter by 30-40% — effectively narrowing a 4-inch lateral to 2.5 inches of usable flow area.
What we see: a rough, ridged interior surface, often dark brown to black, with visible texture that looks almost like coral or volcanic rock. The pipe still flows, but slowly, and any organic debris (paper, grease, hair) catches on the ridges and starts secondary buildup.
Resolution path: hydro jetting with a descaling chain nozzle (Picote Maxi Cleaner, Milwaukee M18 Switch Pack, or Spartan jet at 4,000 PSI) physically scrubs the wall back to bare metal. For extreme cases, Picote-style mechanical descaling chains are pulled through the pipe. The descaling buys typically 2-4 years before the next round; trenchless CIPP lining is the permanent fix.
Finding 3: Hairline crack or fracture (NASSCO codes CL, CC, CM, CS)
Detroit's freeze-thaw cycles and 80 years of soil pressure produce four classes of pipe cracking, in order of severity:
- CL — Crack Longitudinal (a line running the length of the pipe)
- CC — Crack Circumferential (a line going around the pipe)
- CM — Crack Multiple (combined longitudinal and circumferential)
- CS — Crack Spiral (helical crack along the pipe)
What we see: a fine dark line on the pipe wall, sometimes weeping moisture, sometimes with tiny root tendrils starting to find their way through. CL cracks usually appear at the pipe crown (12 o'clock position) where flexural stress is highest. CC cracks appear at joints, where the pipe was already weakest.
Resolution path: hairline cracks without active infiltration get monitored with annual rescope. Cracks with active root intrusion or weeping water need trenchless CIPP lining to seal them and restore structural strength. Spiral cracks or wide multiple-crack patterns usually indicate the pipe is near end-of-life — replacement is the right call.
Finding 4: Joint offset (NASSCO codes JOM, JOL, JOS)
The bell-and-spigot joint of an older clay tile or cast-iron pipe relies on the spigot end sitting inside the bell end with sealing material between them. When soil settles or roots pressure the pipe, the spigot can shift inside the bell — a "joint offset."
- JOM — Joint Offset Medium (1/2 to 1 inch displacement)
- JOL — Joint Offset Large (more than 1 inch)
- JOS — Joint Offset Severe (significant misalignment)
What we see: at a joint location, the pipe wall suddenly appears to "step" downward or sideways. Water flow may form a small pool at the offset; root intrusion almost always accompanies a significant offset because the offset creates a permanent gap.
Resolution path: small offsets (under 1/2 inch) tolerated indefinitely if there's no infiltration. Medium offsets repaired with trenchless lining, which essentially creates a new internal pipe that bridges the misalignment. Severe offsets need pipe bursting or full excavation — trenchless lining can't bridge a 1.5-inch step without compromising flow capacity.
Finding 5: Bellied or sagging pipe (NASSCO code SAG)
Over decades, pipe sections can drop slightly under settled soil, creating a low spot where the pipe sags below its designed slope. Water and debris pool in the belly between flow events, gradually building up a partial restriction.
What we see: the camera moves through what looks like a normal pipe, then descends visibly as the lens passes through a section that's below the surrounding pipe grade. The bottom of the belly often has standing water, sometimes with visible sediment or debris. The pipe wall itself may be intact — the problem is the geometry, not the material.
Resolution path: SAG findings get categorized by the depth of the belly relative to the pipe diameter. Bellies less than 25% of the pipe diameter can be tolerated with hydro jetting on a 12-18 month schedule to flush the trapped debris. Larger bellies need either pipe bursting (which can re-establish proper grade with new HDPE pipe) or spot excavation to lift the bellied section.
Finding 6: Biofilm coating
Not a structural defect but a flow problem. Bacterial colonies build a slimy layer (officially "Biological Slime Growth" in NASSCO terminology) on the pipe wall, which catches paper, hair, and grease, and produces sewer odor. Common in homes with long periods between flow events — vacation homes, basement bathrooms used rarely, etc.
What we see: a gray-green or pinkish slimy coating, sometimes with visible "streamers" hanging from the upper pipe wall as the camera moves.
Resolution path: hydro jetting scrubs the biofilm off the wall mechanically. Follow-up with Bio-Clean or Roebic K-77 enzyme treatment to colonize the line with beneficial bacteria that crowd out the problem strains.
Finding 7: Infiltration (NASSCO codes IR, IRD, IRW)
Groundwater entering the sewer from outside the pipe. Bad news on two levels: it indicates pipe-wall failure or joint failure, and it adds unnecessary volume to your wastewater bill if the sewer charge is volumetric.
- IR — Infiltration Runner (steady trickle)
- IRD — Infiltration Dripper (slow drip)
- IRW — Infiltration Weeper (moisture without distinct drip)
What we see: visible water entering the pipe from a crack, a joint, or an unexpected hole. Often most apparent immediately after a heavy rain when the surrounding soil is saturated.
Resolution path: trenchless CIPP lining seals the entire pipe interior with a watertight epoxy liner. For localized infiltration at a single joint, spot lining or a CIPP "spot repair" sleeve seals just the affected section.
Finding 8: Foreign object
The unexpected category, and the one that often produces the entertaining (or distressing) inspection videos. In the past three years across Metro Detroit, we've found:
- "Flushable" wet wipes — by far the most common, usually tangled into a rope-like mass
- Children's bath toys (rubber ducks, plastic figurines, small balls)
- A complete iPhone 13 (lodged in the trapway of a guest bathroom toilet)
- Dental floss (forms a netting that catches everything else)
- Sanitary products (despite manufacturer instructions)
- Cooking grease "icebergs" — congealed lumps several inches across
- Marbles, coins, jewelry, dental implants, hearing aids
- Tool fragments from previous cabling attempts (broken cutter heads)
Resolution path: depends on the object. Most are retrievable with the camera-guided grip attachment or a small retrieval claw. Hard objects lodged in a trapway sometimes require pulling the toilet for access. Wipe masses get hydro-jetted apart and then flushed through.
Finding 9: Collapsed or deformed section (NASSCO codes BVF, BSV, X)
The worst-case finding, but rare. The pipe wall has structurally failed — either inwardly (collapsed) or distorted in shape:
- BVF — Broken, Visible Fragments
- BSV — Broken, Soil Visible Through Pipe
- X — Collapsed (camera cannot pass)
What we see: catastrophic pipe-wall failure. The pipe is no longer a pipe. In a BSV finding, you can see actual soil through what used to be the pipe wall. In a full X finding, the camera physically can't continue forward — the lumen is closed.
Common in pre-1955 homes with Orangeburg pipe (a now-discredited bituminized fiber pipe material that was widely installed in the post-WWII building boom and is now reaching the end of its lifecycle). Also seen in heavily root-damaged clay tile pipes.
Resolution path: no cleaning method addresses a structurally collapsed pipe. The repair is either pipe bursting (pulls a new HDPE pipe through, fragmenting the old one outward) or full excavation. See the sewer line repair page.
What the inspection report includes
A proper Detroit camera inspection report should give you, in writing and recorded video, all of:
- Date, address, time, technician name, equipment used
- Pipe material identification (cast iron, clay tile, Orangeburg, PVC, ABS, transite, etc.)
- Total length scoped, with start and end points
- Distance and clock-position notes for each defect (e.g., "Root intrusion TRL at 42 feet, 11 o'clock")
- NASSCO PACP defect codes where applicable
- Sonde-located above-ground marks for any defect that may need excavation
- Recommended next steps with cost estimates for each option
- Full video recording emailed as a downloadable link within 4 hours
Anyone who runs a camera but doesn't deliver these eight items is just doing video, not an inspection.
When to ask for a camera inspection
